Austin T. Pittman
Chairman, SharedClarity and CEO of UnitedHealthcare Community & State
Austin Pittman is CEO of UnitedHealthcare Community & State, a division of UnitedHealth Group (NYSE: UNH). He leads the nation’s largest health benefits company, delivering quality health care at an affordable cost for 25 state governments that represent more than 4 million individuals, including more than 2 million children. UnitedHealthcare Community & State leverages the national capabilities of UnitedHealth Group and delivers them at the local market level to support effective care management, strong regulatory partnerships, greater administrative efficiency, improved clinical outcomes and the ability to adapt to a changing market environment.
Prior to being named CEO at UnitedHealthcare Community & State, Austin was president of UnitedHealthcare Networks (UHN). Austin led this business serving the diverse membership needs of Commercial, Medicare and Medicaid plans. Austin and his UHN team created focused, high-performing provider care networks ready to support the largest expansion of health coverage in several decades. Through Austin’s leadership, UnitedHealthcare has established itself as the industry leader by introducing more value-based arrangements with care providers covering more consumers than any other competitor.
Austin also served as chief growth officer for UnitedHealthcare Employer & Individual, the largest business division within UnitedHealth Group, serving more than 45 million consumers and managing health care benefits for individuals, public-sector employers, and businesses of all sizes. He was appointed to that role in 2009 following several years of successful leadership positions within UnitedHealthcare’s local markets as health plan CEO of North and South Carolina and president of Texas and Oklahoma.
Austin has worked in the health care industry for more than 20 years, having begun his career working in various roles for both a community-based behavioral health facility and Baylor Health Care System. He is also very active in the community, serving on the board of directors for various organizations, including Inclusive Health, which serves both the North Carolina state risk pool and the federal risk pool; the board of trustees at McMurry University; and the University of North Carolina – Greensboro Board of Visitors. He also served on the North Carolina Institute of Medicine Task Force on Prevention.
Austin earned a Bachelor of Science degree from McMurry University in Abilene, Texas, a Master of Science in business/human relations from Amberton University in Dallas, and completed the Master of Health Care Delivery Science program from Dartmouth College. Austin also served in the United States Marine Corps. An avid chef at home, Austin is married and has four sons.
Mark C. West
Mark C. West is an executive with more than 25 years of experience in developing and implementing high-performing procurement and supply chain organizations. Mark has held key executive roles with multibillion-dollar companies, specializing in the re-engineering of procurement organizations due to mergers, acquisitions or historical underperformance.
Mark joined SharedClarity LLC in January 2012 after serving as vice president of supply chain management for UnitedHealthcare since late 2009. He is responsible for the launch of SharedClarity, focused on improving the quality and cost of medical supplies industry-wide. From 2005 to 2009, Mark was executive director of supply chain management for the Cleveland Clinic Healthcare System. His re-engineering efforts challenged industry-wide health care purchasing practices, yielding bottom-line cost savings nine times historical levels. Mark also implemented state-of-the-art technologies to improve materials management processes, highlighted by the deployment of a new 230,000-square-foot service center.
Mark was also the founder and president of Purchasing Partners Incorporated, a purchasing services company dedicated to helping companies reduce their cost of acquiring goods and services. His experience also includes serving as the vice president of corporate purchasing for US Airways and corporate director of operations support for Honeywell International.
Mark received a Masters of Business Administration in Marketing from Cleveland State University, and a Bachelor of Science in Human Resource Management from Bowling Green State University. He is also Green Belt certified in Six-Sigma and sits on the Board of Managers for SharedClarity LLC.
Alex C. McLaren, M.D.
Vice President of Clinical Outcomes
Dr. Alex McLaren—an accomplished and well-known orthopedic surgeon, professor and researcher—joined SharedClarity as Vice President of Clinical Outcomes in February 2016. in August 2017, Alex was inducted into the Musculoskeletal Infection Society Hall of Fame.
Alex, who has more than 30 years of experience in orthopedic surgery, oversees all clinical review efforts, the cornerstone of SharedClarity. He works closely with our member-owners and their physicians, especially those who participate in the clinical review councils.
He moved from his native Canada to Phoenix, Ariz., in 1990 to pursue his academic and clinical interests in orthopedic infections, revision arthroplasty and complex musculoskeletal trauma. His background and expertise are an excellent fit for SharedClarity, which focuses on promoting positive patient outcomes.
Alex was most recently program director of the Banner University Medical Center-Phoenix (Ariz.) Residency Program in Orthopaedic Surgery, serving in the position since 2006. He is the former director of Orthopaedic Education for Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center in Phoenix. He was also the program director of the Phoenix Orthopedic Residency Program at Maricopa County Medical Center between 1998 and 2000. He has been in private orthopedic surgery practice twice during his career in Phoenix.
Alex graduated from Queen’s University School of Medicine, Kingston, Ontario, Canada in 1977. He completed his orthopedic residency at the University of Western Ontario in 1982 and a fellowship in orthopaedic research at the University of Southern California in 1983.
Michael Georgulis Jr.
Vice President of Strategic Sourcing
Leading SharedClarity’s strategic sourcing, Michael Georgulis is responsible for setting the strategic direction for all sourcing operations and contracting practices. He is a longtime health care supply chain executive specializing in helping health care organizations drive down supply costs through innovative and relevant solutions.
Michael joins SharedClarity after serving as vice president of strategic sourcing for Premier Health Alliance in Charlotte, N.C. During his 10-year career with Premier Health, Michael managed a portfolio of supply chain contracts valued at more than $20 billion, with contracts ranging from $100 million to $500 million.
Michael served as vice president of supply chain for Iasis Healthcare, a for-profit IDN, located in Franklin, Tenn. Michael has also held supply chain and purchasing-related positions with HCA and HealthTrust Purchasing Group in Nashville, Tenn.; Lutheran Health System in Fort Wayne, Ind.; Wishard Hospital in Indianapolis and Chandler Medical Center at the University of Kentucky in Lexington.
Michael earned a Master in public administration with a concentration on hospitals from the University of Kentucky in Lexington. He received his Bachelor of Science in hospital administration from Indiana University in Indianapolis.
Director of Finance
Chad Wiskow helps develop and oversee the company’s business plan, the corporate infrastructure and the recruitment of member-owners – the foundation for our success.
Chad played a critical role in the formation, launch and operations in his previous position as finance manager of SharedClarity. He established the company’s finance infrastructure, including budgeting, reporting and accounts payable/accounts receivable activities.
Before joining SharedClarity, Chad was a senior financial consultant for UnitedHealth Group in Minnetonka, Minn. UnitedHealthcare, a UnitedHealth Group (NYSE: UNH) company, is a co-founder and member-owner of SharedClarity.
Chad earned his MBA in Accounting and Finance from the University of St. Thomas-Opus College of Business, and a Bachelor of Science in Aeronautical/Aerospace Engineering Technology from Arizona State University.
